Perbedaan Was dan Were

Perbedaan antara was dan were terletak pada subjek yang digunakan. Kata “was” digunakan pada singular subject, seperti I, He, She, It, nama orang, dan singular noun. 

Sementara itu, “were” digunakan pada plural subject, seperti They, We, dan plural noun. Meskipun “were” identik dengan jumlah subjek yang banyak (plural), to be tersebut juga bisa digunakan pada singular subject, yaitu You sebagai second person subject. 

Adapun “You all” atau “You guys” berperan sebagai second person plural yang turut menggunakan “were” sebagai to be.

If i was disebut juga indicative mood dan digunakan untuk menjelaskan situasi atau kondisi yang telah terjadi di masa lampau. Contoh:

• If I was hungry, I would grab a snack from the kitchen
• If I was feeling adventurous, I once went bungee jumping during a vacation
• If I was stressed at work, I used to take short breaks to relax
• If I was feeling tired, I would take a short nap
• If I was lucky, I would find a parking spot right in front of the store

2. If i were

If i were disebut juga subjunctive mood dan digunakan untuk menjelaskan situasi yang dibayangkan (hypothetical situation), khayalan, imajinasi, dan hal-hal bukan berdasarkan pada kenyataan (tidak pernah terjadi). Contoh:

• If I were a millionaire, I would travel the world
• If I were a superhero, I would save people from disasters
• If I were a fairy tale character, I would be Cinderella
• If I were a judge, I would ensure justice was always served
• If I were a composer, I would create beautiful symphonies that move the soul
