Contoh 1: Cerita rakyat dari Indonesia

Malin Kundang

Once upon a time, in a small coastal village in Indonesia, there lived a poor woman named Siti Fatimah. She had a son named Malin Kundang, who was known for his striking handsomeness and strong physique.

One day, a merchant ship anchored near their village, and Malin Kundang saw an opportunity for a better life. He decided to leave his mother and seek his fortune at sea. Tearfully, Siti Fatimah blessed her son and gave him her only valuable possession, a beautifully woven songket (traditional cloth), to keep him safe and remember her by.

Malin Kundang joined the ship’s crew and quickly proved himself to be a skilled sailor. Over the years, he rose through the ranks and eventually became the ship’s captain. He amassed great wealth and lived a luxurious life in a distant land.

Years passed, and Malin Kundang became arrogant and forgetful of his humble origins. He married a wealthy woman and adopted the habits of the rich. He had a grand mansion, servants, and all the luxuries he could desire.

One day, while Malin Kundang’s ship was anchored near his old village, word reached Siti Fatimah that her long-lost son had returned as a rich captain. Filled with joy and longing, she hurried to the shore to meet him.

When Malin Kundang saw an old, ragged woman approaching, he did not recognize her as his mother. He arrogantly denied knowing her, ashamed of his impoverished past. He refused to acknowledge her as his mother and said, “I have no mother! You must be mistaken!”

Siti Fatimah was heartbroken and devastated by her son’s rejection. With tears streaming down her face, she uttered a curse, “If you are truly my son, then may you never set foot on land again unless it is the land where you will find your own mother’s grave.”

Suddenly, a great storm arose, and the ship was tossed about on the turbulent sea. The crew desperately tried to navigate the vessel, but the waves were merciless. Malin Kundang realized the gravity of his mother’s curse and begged for forgiveness, but it was too late.

The ship was struck by lightning, and it turned into stone. Malin Kundang and his entire crew were transformed into stone statues on the ship’s deck, forever condemned to sail the seas as a testament to his ungratefulness.

Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox: The Creation of the Great Lakes

Long ago, in the vast wilderness of North America, there lived a giant lumberjack named Paul Bunyan. He was known far and wide for his incredible size, strength, and the giant axe he wielded. By his side, there was his loyal companion, Babe the Blue Ox, whose fur was as blue as the sky on a clear summer day.

One winter’s day, Paul and Babe found themselves in the northern woods of Minnesota. The snow was falling heavily, covering the land in a thick, white blanket. As they journeyed through the forest, they realized that something was amiss. The animals were struggling to find water, for all the streams and lakes were frozen solid.

Paul, with his sharp mind and even sharper axe, decided it was time to lend a hand. He swung his mighty axe into the ground, creating a massive crater. With Babe’s help, they started to dig. They dug deeper and deeper, and as they did, the earth trembled beneath their feet.

After hours of digging, Paul and Babe hit something hard. It was the edge of a gigantic underground lake. Water started gushing out, creating a river so wide that even Babe couldn’t jump across it. This river flowed southward, forming a chain of lakes, and it became known as the Mississippi River.

But Paul Bunyan and Babe didn’t stop there. They continued to dig, expanding the lake system. Paul swung his axe so powerfully that the ground shook, and trees toppled like matchsticks. He named the new lakes one by one – Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario.

With each swing of his axe, the lakes grew larger, deeper, and more magnificent. These became the Great Lakes, some of the largest and most beautiful bodies of freshwater in the world.

As Paul Bunyan and Babe worked tirelessly, the sun began to set. The lakes sparkled in the fading light, reflecting the blue of the sky and the orange of the setting sun. The animals rejoiced, and the people who settled near the lakes thanked Paul and Babe for their incredible gift.

From that day on, the Great Lakes provided water, fish, and transportation for countless people, all thanks to the hard work and kindness of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. They continued their adventures, leaving behind a legacy of wonder and awe that lives on in the tales of the great lumberjack and his faithful companion.

The Chained Oak of Alton Towers

Once upon a time, in the early 19th century, there lived a wealthy landowner named Earl Talbot in the vicinity of Alton Towers. Earl Talbot was a man known for his arrogance and disregard for the well-being of the common folk who lived on his land.

One fateful day, as Earl Talbot was riding his horse through the woods near his estate, he encountered an old beggar woman who was desperately in need of help. She approached him, her voice frail and trembling, and asked for some assistance or alms. Earl Talbot, however, was in a foul mood that day and dismissed her with disdain, refusing her plea for aid.

The old woman, crushed by his cruelty, placed a curse upon the callous earl and his estate, vowing that the Talbot family would know misfortune for generations to come. With a wicked incantation, she proclaimed, “For every branch on the Old Oak tree that falls, a member of the Talbot family shall die!”

Earl Talbot scoffed at the curse and rode away, believing it to be nothing more than the ramblings of a deranged beggar. However, as time passed, strange and unfortunate events began to plague the Talbot family. Misfortunes included illness, accidents, and untimely deaths, all seemingly linked to the curse of the beggar woman.

Disturbed by the family’s suffering, a local wise woman advised Earl Talbot to seek the beggar woman’s forgiveness and break the curse. Fearing for his family’s future, he complied. He journeyed into the woods to find the beggar woman but soon discovered that she had passed away, and her spirit was beyond reach.

Desperate to atone for his actions, Earl Talbot ordered a massive iron chain to be wrapped around the oldest oak tree near Alton Towers, known as the Chained Oak. He vowed that the chain would remain intact until a member of the Talbot family would willingly seek the forgiveness of the beggar woman’s ghost.

For generations, the chain remained around the Chained Oak, and the curse persisted, taking a toll on the Talbot family. It wasn’t until many years later that a descendant of the earl, realizing the gravity of the curse, sought out the ghost of the beggar woman and begged for her forgiveness.

The curse was finally lifted, and the chain was removed from the Chained Oak.
